Since the new ssc.gov.in portal (2024), central SSC exams capture a live photo through your webcam or phone camera while you fill in the form, so you may not need to upload a photo at all. The signature is still uploaded as a JPEG. The photo tool with name-and-date strip is for state Staff Selection boards and other exams that still ask for an uploaded SSC-style photo.

SSC notices give sizes in cm and KB, not pixels. 200 × 230 px and 140 × 60 px are the pixel sizes most commonly used for these KB limits; if your form shows different pixels, use the home page tool.

How to use

  1. Choose the Signature tab (or Photo if your form asks for an uploaded photo).
  2. Pick the image from your gallery. For the photo, tick Add name and date if the notice asks for it and type your name and the date the photo was taken.
  3. Crop: face inside the oval for the photo; signature filling the box with a small margin for the signature.
  4. When the After box shows a size inside the range, tap Download JPG.

What changed on the new SSC portal

Until 2023, SSC candidates prepared a photo and signature in advance and uploaded both. On the current portal the photo step works differently: the application form opens your camera and takes a live picture. If your notice says this, there is no photo to resize — just sit in good light in front of a plain wall, remove glasses and caps, and look straight into the camera when it asks.

The signature is still uploaded as a file, and the 10–20 KB rule is where most candidates get stuck: a clean signature is so simple that it often compresses to only 3–5 KB. This page handles that automatically.

The Photo tab remains useful for state-level selection boards and other recruiters that copied SSC’s older rules: 20–50 KB, recent colour photo, and sometimes name and date printed below the face.

Common rejection reasons and fixes

Signature below 10 KB. Many online resizers only cap the maximum. Here the result is kept inside the full 10–20 KB band; the download button shows the final size.

Signature in capitals or not matching. Use your normal running signature. The same signature is checked on the attendance sheet at the exam.

Faint or grey signature. Ballpoint ink on thin paper looks grey after compression. Use a thicker black pen, keep Clean signature on, and slide Remove shadows to the right if the paper still looks dirty.

Photo with cap, spectacles or busy background. SSC notices specifically mention photos without cap and spectacles. A plain light background avoids rejection at verification.

Name strip text too small. Keep the name short (first and last name) so it prints large enough to read. The tool shrinks the text automatically to fit the width.

Tips for the live photo step

Use a laptop webcam or phone at eye level, about an arm’s length away. Sit facing a window rather than with the window behind you, and make sure your face is not cut off at the top. If the capture looks dark or blurry, retake it before submitting — once submitted, it cannot usually be changed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the photo and signature size for SSC?

SSC notices ask for a JPEG photo of 20–50 KB (about 3.5 × 4.5 cm) and a JPEG signature of 10–20 KB (about 4.0 × 2.0 cm). This tool makes the photo 200 × 230 pixels and the signature 140 × 60 pixels, both inside those KB ranges.

Do I still need to upload a photo for SSC CGL or CHSL?

On the current ssc.gov.in portal, the application captures a live photograph with your webcam or phone camera, so a prepared photo is usually not uploaded. Read the 'How to apply' section of your notice. You still need a scanned signature, which this page makes.

Why do some forms want name and date on the photo?

Some boards ask for the candidate's name and the date the photo was taken to be printed below the face, to stop old or someone else's photos being reused. Tick the option, type your name in capitals and the date, and the tool adds a clean white strip at the bottom.

My signature comes out under 10 KB. Will it be rejected?

It could be, because the minimum is 10 KB. This tool raises JPEG quality first and, if a simple signature is still too small, adds harmless blank data inside the file so it lands safely between 10 and 20 KB without changing the image.

Can I sign in capital letters?

Avoid it. Many notices say a signature in capital letters will not be accepted. Sign the way you normally do, and use the same signature in the exam hall.

How do I make the signature look clear?

Sign with a black gel pen on plain white paper, take the photo in daylight, and keep Clean signature switched on. It turns grey paper white and makes the ink darker, which reads well even at 140 × 60 pixels.
